What’s the first step in starting a project with Marksman Builders?

It starts with a conversation. Reach out through our contact page or give us a call at 530-885-7300, and we’ll talk through your goals, your property, and your timeline. From there, we’ll walk you through what’s possible and outline the next steps — whether that’s connecting you with a designer or architect, or moving straight into planning.

Do you handle design as well as construction, or just the build?

We manage every phase in-house, from design coordination through permitting, construction, and final walkthrough — so you have one point of contact throughout the entire project. We also collaborate closely with local architects and designers when a project calls for it.

How involved will I be in the design and material selection process?

As involved as you want to be. Many homeowners enjoy being hands-on with cabinetry, countertops, and finishes, while others prefer to lean on our experience and recommendations. We tailor the process to how you like to work.

Do you work with my architect or designer, or do you have your own?

Both — we’re happy to collaborate with an architect or designer you’re already working with, and we can also connect you with trusted local professionals if you don’t have one yet.

During your initial consultation, we’ll help you understand what’s realistic for your goals and budget. Homeowners should plan $250,000 to $350,00 for a remodel of a kitchen, dining room and a bathroom.

The biggest cost drivers are typically the scope of structural changes, material and finish selections, site conditions (like steep lots or well systems common in the Sierra Foothills), and permitting requirements specific to your area.

What’s the difference between a remodel, an addition, and a new custom home build?

A remodel updates or reconfigures your existing home’s interior or exterior. An addition expands your home’s square footage by building new space. A custom home build starts from the ground up on your lot, designed entirely around your needs. We handle all three, often blending elements depending on the project.

Do you build ADUs or studios?

Yes — we build detached ADUs, art studios, home offices, and other flex spaces tailored to how you plan to use them.

Yes, we offer historic home restoration with period-accurate detailing, preserving the character of older homes while updating them for modern living.
