Why fire hardening matters

Most homes lost in wildfires aren’t consumed by a wall of flame. They’re ignited by wind-blown embers that land on roofs, slip through vents, and settle into gutters, decks, and the ground against the house. Embers can travel a mile or more ahead of a fire. The right construction details can mean the difference between a home that stands and one that doesn’t.

At Marksman Builders, we build and retrofit properties to resist embers, radiant heat, and flame contact, so you’re protected before the next red flag warning.

What we harden

Roofs and gutters
Class A fire-rated roofing, noncombustible gutters, and gutter guards to keep embers and debris from igniting.

Vents and openings
Ember-resistant vent screening for attics, crawl spaces, and eaves. Vents are one of the most common ways embers get inside a home.

Siding and exterior walls
Replacement of combustible siding with noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials, plus proper wall-to-ground clearances and fire-blocking.

Windows and doors
Dual-pane tempered glass, metal screens, and fire-resistant doors and garage doors with ember-resistant seals.

Decks, fences, and attachments
Ignition-resistant decking and replacing wood fences or gates where they attach to the home.

Defensible space and the “first five feet”
Hardscape, gravel, and noncombustible ground treatments near the structure, and removal of combustible materials against the home.

FAQ

Do I need to harden my whole house at once?
No. We’ll prioritize the highest-impact upgrades, usually vents, roof edges, and the area around the foundation, and phase the rest.

Do I need a permit?
Many upgrades do. We handle permitting and inspections.

Will this make my home fireproof?
No home is fireproof. Hardening significantly reduces the likelihood that embers and heat will ignite your home, and it works best alongside defensible space and neighborhood-wide effort.

What areas do you serve?
Placer, Nevada, El Dorado and Sacramento Counties including Loomis, Auburn, Granite Bay, Placerville,  Truckee, and surrounding areas.
